William Morris: An Art History Lecture by Nick Nelson
Tuesday 26th May 2026 at 10:30am
Quaker Meeting House, The Parade, Marlborough SN8 1NE
£15 to include tea, coffee and biscuits

Marking 130 years since his death in 1896, this illustrated lecture will explore the English textile designer, poet, artist, writer and socialist activist William Morris. Educated at Marlborough College, William Morris is chiefly associated with the English Arts and Crafts Movement, aimed at challenging the industrial age with a return to hand labour and hand craftsmanship. In 1861 Morris established the design company Morris and Co. for his prolific artistic output, inspired by the system of medieval guilds. The ‘Firm’ produced high quality-stained glass, embroidery, wallpaper, furniture design and tapestry which has a lasting legacy in the company Sanderson and Co. Whilst harking back to a bygone era, paradoxically Morris’ work has exerted a profound impact on modern design, in the Bauhaus in Germany, and of course on both Laura Ashley and Cath Kidson in the UK.
