One of the most influential figures in modern design, Scottish art-architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh began his career at the architectural practice of Honeyman and Keppie in Glasgow. From his training he created modern architecture’s first masterpiece the Glasgow School of Art. This led to prestigious commissions – most notably from Catherine Cranston in the form of the stunning Willow Tea Rooms in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Mackintosh concerned himself with every aspect of architecture and decoration, from knives and forks to fireplaces, chairs, wrought ironwork and stained glass. Not always well received, Mackintosh was synonymous with The Glasgow Four or, more pejoratively, The Spook School. His unique blend of the Scottish Baronial style with more contemporary Art Nouveau and just a tinge of fashionable Japonisme exerted a profound impact on Secessionism in Vienna.
