‘Renaissance Semiotics’

This visual lecture focusses on iconography in Renaissance Art of the 15th and 16th centuries in Florence and Venice respectively. The works of Botticelli et al intentionally pandered to a growing cult of Humanism and erudition among wealthy families such as the Medici. Unlocking semiotics in these complex works is an art form in itself, and much time and ink has been spilt in trying to decode the multiple layers of Quattrocento and Cinquecento masterworks.
