This talk has been devised to coincide with the eponymous exhibition at the British Museum, which runs from 9 March – 18 June 2017. Charting key events in US history over the last 50 years from the assassination of JFK to the Vietnam War and the AIDS crisis, this illustrated presentation documents a turbulent time in the life of a nation, subsequently touching upon aspects of power, politics and propaganda. The medium of printmaking prevailed, suiting well, the Pop artists’ penchant for billboard style advertising and iconic brandname-dropping, plus its affinity with the contemporary newspaper report. Such celebrated Modern Masters as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg will be represented in this broad sweep of American culture and consumerism captured via the visual arts. This talks also coincides with the Robert Rauschenberg at Tate Modern up to 2nd April 2017 and Pop Art in Print from the V & A Collection 25th March to 4th June at The Wilson Gallery, Cheltenham.
